The car accident

I remember the night of the car accident
I remember all the trouble it caused
The destruction of our hopes and dreams
Problems that came because of that night
We had just bought carpet cleaning machinery
Ready to start our own business: that's right
Then the car that was to be our deposit
Was wrecked: totalled: gone: up in smoke
Tim ended up in hospital that awful night...
His broken foot a tangled mess: operated on
Lisfranc's fracture: just like in cavalry days
His left foot was broken: right across
Dislocation of the metatarsal joint of the left foot
That's what this old report describes
It happened on the 24th of May back in 1982
It's funny because that's what I had totally forgotten
Everything else remained in my memory
But not the dates: funny how the memory plays tricks
The hospital report says he discharged himself
On the 26th of May in 1982: our wedding anniversary
He said he could not stay a minute longer
Had to be home: the hospital stay was unbearable
I was working at the time: he had to be home for me
I still recall the day he made a cup of tea
Forgot he couldn't walk: forgot he had to crawl
Pushing the cup into the lounge room
On the floor in front of him: laugh about it now
But it must have been very difficult I guess
We never seem to appreciate the pain
That someone else goes through: we cannot
Feel their pain because...
We only understand our own...
