Cup of bitterness

He drank of the cup of bitterness
He drank of that cup of woe
No other could have borne our sins
He it was, who had to suffer for us so
Jesus begged of Him
"Father, if it be possible...
Let this cup pass from me...
Nevertheless not as I will
But as thou wilt..."
He begged God to allow that cup to pass...
Though the darkness gathered round him
Though he trembled at that awful thought
There was no other possibility at hand
There was none...
Who, could our price have bought?
Three times he asked it of his Father
Three times he trembled...
Blood dripped from his precious face
The elements of darkness were...
Gathered about to discourage his soul
Though he asked his disciples to pray
Though he begged them to awake: stay
No human sympathy was there waiting
As he sought them; needing them to pray
It was here that the destiny of a lost world
Trembled in the balance...
Should he refuse to drink that cup?
Eternal ruin would befall mankind...
Eternal ruin for the human race...
An angel from heaven strengthened him...

It was for me that Jesus drank of that awful cup...
That I should be saved from such a terrible fate...
