Along Dusty Country Roads

Every day was just the same
Walk to school; those two long miles
Learn and play and have some fun
Then walk home again!
Some days we'd visit friends
On the way home from school
Mum and dad would be at work
They didn't finish until 5.30 pm
So we had time to spend
On that long way home
It always seemed more fun
To stop along the way
To have a chat and run and play
So that's what we did to pass the time
Until we had to be home!
Irrigation channels were everywhere
No sprinkler systems then
Only long hard tractor work
Making furrows every time!
So in summer time
We'd walk along those cool channels
Wet our feet along the way
Enjoying those hot summer days
Looking for Yabbies underneath the rocks
Poking at the bigger rocks and stones
With long sticks to find little snakes
And frogs; anything to break the silence
Then we'd scream and laugh
Have a bit of fun along the way
Along those old dusty roads; to home!
