Country life

I loved living in the country
I loved the freedom and the peace
My parents had 21 acres of land
3 acres were sultana vines
The rest was empty
So we planted tomatoes
Everyone helped out
Family and friends would
All help with the planting
My uncle and aunt and cousins
My friend Martha and her parents
We'd all get together to plant
Those tomato seedlings
Into that wet ground
My dad would spend a day
Ploughing the furrows and then
The water would come down
That old concrete channel
From the huge one at the back
Of our long narrow property
Mum and dad would have to
Join those furrows to the channel openings
By hand; they had to hoe that ground
It was a lot of hard work!
Then a few months later
It was time to pick the ripened fruit
That was difficult as well but
We got it done!
There were huge wooden bins
We filled them with tomatoes
They were sent to huge factories
To make tomato sauce!
