Hiding in the pines

As a kid we visited friends
We played lots of games there
Hidey chasey too!
I loved to hide among
Those beautiful pines
That lined the roads
They were so cool and scented
I made nests and cubbies
Among those old branches
I ate the tiny pine nuts
They tasted just like those
Trees smelled: all piney and sappy
They made me kind of happy as
The breeze made sweet music
The branches swayed to and fro
I never wanted to go
I felt so "at home" there
I wasn't even aware of
Anything else!
Tiny birds chattered
In the tops of the trees
They were so blessed and free
I wanted to be just like them
That's how I imagined my life to be
On those beautiful summer days at Winkie!
