Ghost Fox by James Houston

I loved reading the story
By James Houston
About a young woman
Captured by the Abenaki Indians
Taken into Canada
As a slave; dragged long
Hardly fed; treated so terribly
The story of so many people
Back in those early years
How difficult a life to imagine
Losing everything and everyone
Taken from your precious family
How anyone survived?
God only knows!
But this tale tugged
At my heart strings
It took me up into Canada's
Cold wilderness
Along those northern streams
Into that freezing winter whiteness
Life was difficult for all
During those war years
Everyone called on to take sides
French and English
Allied with Indian Nations
In their determination to win
At any cost! So many lives lost!
Lord when will man learn?
To live together without hatred?
When will there ever be peace?
Among all of your dear Nations?
