Kangaroo dawn

We drove from the city before the sun came up
Darkness still ruled but the lights were bright
Finally as we entered the countryside that dawn
Kangaroos were everywhere: wombats too
Hundreds of animals crowded the roadsides
Desperate for some green grass: anything to eat
The drought had taken every blade of grass
Turned it dry and unpalatable but all was gone into hungry bellies
Now as we slowed near Blanchetown, we were amazed
For it seemed that every creature from miles around
Was gathered here to eat whatever bounty there was
Dew drops that rolled from the bitumen road to water
Weeds became a feast for hungry creatures of all shapes
They ate side by side: kangaroos, wombats, rabbits and emus
By their hundreds they were amassed; enjoying God's bounty
The only greenness in that whole drought-bared land!
