The benefit of the doubt

I will give you the benefit of the doubt

I will let you go on and on

Without raising a shout

But just prove to me

That you deserve my trust

For when you fall along the track

That’s when I must hold back

If you are the genuine article?

If you are truly who you profess?

Then I am happy to get to know you!

Happy to share your life!

But I also understand Satan’s wiles

I also see into people’s hearts

This gift the Lord has given me

This blessing to be told

So if I discern your intentions

If I see that you have lied

Though I forgive the misunderstanding

I cannot let your lies go untold!
