What shall I do to inherit eternal life?

The young lawyer came to Jesus
A question on his mind?
Asked the saviour this question
"Master, what shall I do?
To inherit eternal life"
Jesus replied
"What is written in the law?
How do you read it?"
The young man replied
"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God...
With all thy heart
With all thy soul
With all thy strength
With all thy mind...
And thy neighbour as thyself"

He answered correctly indeed
But then he said unbelieving...
"Who is my neighbour?"
Jesus said: "This do and thou shalt live"

This is the problem we live with today
We do not understand the answer...
Our neighbour is
The man who lives next door...
The woman who walks the dog...
The child who rides to school...
The beggar on the street...
The elderly in nursing homes...
The drug addict in the gutter...
The refugee on the boat...
The screaming baby in the pram...
The dirty old man who lives alone...
The rich land owner who sneers...
The simpleton who laughs out loud...
The person who begs for coins...
The drunkard sleeping on the steps...
The nurse who tends the injured...
The teenager lost in tears...
The rebel who hates the world...
Each and every one of these...
Is our neighbour
Some are difficult to love...
Some are difficult to care for...
Some are difficult to understand...
Some are difficult to help...
Some are lost...
Some don't want to be found...

But each and every one of these
Is our neighbour
Will you help?
