School of germs

He goes to school in the morning
He comes home in the early afternoon
But though he went alone...
He never returns solo
Each and very day
As he goes about his play
Those germs that others bring
To his hands and to his clothes...
They cling
The first few years of school life
Were ever the same
Who can you trust?
Who can you blame?
So many little children
Playing together every single day
Do they wash their hands?
No! To all our dismay!
Each week brought new illness
Each week he had to stay
At home to recover
At home we discovered
That it happened weekly
What more can anyone say?
Finally we took him to the doctors
And demanded a blood test
Could they please tell us
What was really happening...
We were surprised to say the very least
But at least we discovered
The very nature of the beast...
He had had a terrible virus
They called it CMV
And though it had passed through
It had left its effects we feared
Then he had anaemia
No oxygen going around
No wonder he was always tired
Poor little fellow was so stressed
Tests also showed he'd had glandular fever
Even though he was only six years old
How he'd got this we know not
But it obviously took its toll!
To top it all off we discovered
His left ear was almost totally filled
With fluid so that ear drum
Could barely vibrate you know
All these things we discovered
And finally results began to show
He needed an operation
To remove his tonsils, adenoids
For his breathing was so restricted
It caused 80 percent blockage and
He was snoring every night
My poor little grandson
Was so ill and getting worse
Until finally it was decided
To operate and reverse his course...

Now 6 months later
You wouldn't believe the change
He is full of life and energy
He is growing stronger every day
Now at last he is responding
He is growing up, filling out
He has energy to fight back
With his little brother and his sis
He is so much happier at last
And we his family are thankful
That his terrible illness is now past!
