Fireflies in the night

I've only ever seen fireflies once in my life
Read about them in books and such
But seeing the real thing is an amazing sight
Their glowing little bodies come alive
As they wake up and brighten up the night
We were at a site on our camping trip
We'd covered many miles with our friends
Our two families joined together
Living the Aussie holiday life!
We'd been to Melbourne and then
Along the Great Ocean Road
Saw the Twelve Apostles;
Though there were really less than ten
Climbed many steps to lighthouses
Checked out many historic sites!
We'd been together several weeks
Things were getting rather strained
The kids had been washed up the beach
It was really Shelley's fault
She'd cried out to the waves
Taunting them to do their best
So up it came and washed them all
Into the sand and threw them down!
I'd been having a little rest I must confess
I actually closed my eyes and sighed
Thought of taking that video camera
And capturing their games
But couldn't be bothered to say the least
Then I heard the screams
As Michael led the charge
He was soaking wet; sand and tears
Screaming as he came
Followed by the others
As they all cried in fright
Poor little things; frightened by that giant wave
Now us mums had to shower them all
And get them ready for the night
The fireflies were enchanting
We were all amazed by their sight
And thankful too for the blessings
Of a holiday; of friendship and good nights!
