The D/evil within

What is it that moves you?
Is it envy greed or lust?
Is it pride, gluttony or sloth?
Is there no-one you can trust?
Is there something there that is?
Always urging that “you must”?
Have you lost your self control?
Is your poison cigarettes?
Is it something you regret?
What is it that drives you to give in?
Is there nothing else but greed?
What moves your heart?
What gives your head a start?
How do you cope with your devil within?
Do you sometimes give in?
Do you fight until you win?
What drives you?
Is it a fear of some kind?
Is it an urgency to wound?
Yourself and all around?
Is there something you need to prove?
What gives you the reason to behave?
Are you some substance’s slave?
Do you fight it with your last breath?
Until your lungs are gasping for that air?
It is really so unfair!
Do you like it when it wins?
Do you fight until it stings?
Are you as strong as you do think?
Is there no tiny little chink?
In that armour that surrounds?
You heart and soul and mind?
When it comes on and you crave?
Does your conscience intercede?
Is it the devils’ hoary weed?
Is it jealousy or pride?
Can’t you just push it all aside?
How hard is it to live?
If you can only give?
Your entire trust and soul?
To any little ghoul?
That grows into a giant crow?
Awaiting your will’s demise?
Will it peck out your eyes?
Will it damage those you love?
When will you realise?
Why not surrender you do ask?
It’s just a little lark!
Is it such a hard task?
To be driven to disgust?
By the only things you trust?
Your heart, your mind, your soul?
Do you scream and rant and rage?
Is it anger or disdain?
Is it ‘need’ to cause some pain?
How do you make it stop?
Can you really pause the clock?
Know you, it is your heart?
What drives you?
Can you not realise?
These things are so unwise?
That drives your family insane?
Is it jealousy and pain?
How do you compensate?
For all the pain and hate?
What drives you?
Can you not love and trust?
Must you give in to your lust?
Little by little, but you just
Cannot control it!
Why be like a crazed beast?
That slips into your breast?
What drives you?

Do you not realise?
There is another choice!
It is long and slow to rise
To gain elation that is prized!
To rise above that hurt and pain!
There is so much to gain!
Freedom from the evil that’s within
All you need is to begin!
Start with a tiny change
Just a bit to re-arrange
Be it smokes or drugs or lust?
You really can! You must!
Begin to love and trust!
You can overcome at last!
You can leave it all behind, that past
That disgusts and hurts and busts
Your head and heart and mind
Only you can seek and find!
That place you will not yet trust
Until you finally see
Just what you really can be!
Don’t give in to it!
Fight to the very end!
Rip and tear away that façade
That hides your inner softer side
Let love and beauty guide
Don’t let love shrivel up and die
Aim high up to the skies
Let your mind take wing and soar
Set all evil out the door
Say goodbye to sin and pride
Let your heart go up and glide
Ever upwards and onward
Find that inner you rewarded
With peace and joy expounded
Let God into you heart
Don’t let it fall apart!
‘Tis a slow ride at first
You can forget the past
Let your flag no longer fly
At half mast for that life is past
Your sorrows to depart
Fly the colours of love at last
Give freedom from sin a chance
Give your heart and courage voice
Don’t let evil win the tide
Fight against the sin of pride
For Justice, Love and Peace
Let us raise our voices high
 Together increase the strength
Of all who falter under sin
Give them all a helpful shoulder
Help each other climb that rise
Be at you neighbours side
To help that evil over-ride
That is in us all, inside
Yes do it now and we’ll all win!

Let that passion that’s within
Be for good and not for sin
Know that Angels’ at your side
Just waiting to be your guide
Please believe; I understand
I’ve watched you in your slide
I’ve felt your pain in my own heart
I’m here to let you know
Just how hard it is to see
The one that you do love
Being tossed upon stormy sea
Almost run aground and then
When life’s upon the mend
The fall in bitterness descend

Though it seems no-one really cares
“Tis the evil ones’ awful snare
That has you in its bends
People find it easy to declare
“I’d never go down there”
But little do they know
How the journey often winds
 Looking from the other side
Never having had your choice
Or hearing that sinuous voice
That lured you to surmise
How tiny seemed the vice
They know not how they would fare
Were it them that was down there

If you were up above
Looking down on them with love
Crying out in all your pain
Would they not theorise
“He knows not what he says!”
‘Tis only when you wear the other’s shoes
That you can truly recognise their blues
And not just look upon their
Frightened eyes and pale wan face
And turn away your scornful face
Thinking only of their disgrace
And not the Lord’s forgiving grace
Shame on you and all your race
Of merciless sinners full of hate

Mercy is the strongest tool
Harden not your heart or you’ll
Find the same disfavour turned on you
When time is really at an end
There’ll be no time to just pretend
You were merely trying to make your point
Your nose will soon be out of joint
That same unforgiving stare
Will be the one you can not bear
When judgment lights on you
And time runs out for then
Your time will be at an end
Jesus will return and show
All sinners to their justly earned end!
