Bushfire night 17/1/14 9.30 pm

We are leaving our home to flee from these fires
They surround our home; there is a circle of flames
Upon the map: we are somewhere in between it all
There was a chance to go to Truro but we waited too long
Then that avenue was closed: no way of escape up there
The fires were heading in that direction: we could see them
Leaping madly along the top of the hills: no chance of stopping
The cool change brought gusting winds: 80 km per hour I think (more?)
I knew we would be okay but Vanessa was panicking: Michael too!
I would not let them go alone so I said: "I will drive you to safety!"
It was 9.30 pm when we got to Swan Reach to cross the ferry
We'd passed a few cars coming towards Sedan from the ferry
We were wondering why anyone would come this way: towards the fires!
As we waited beside the ferry we could see a red glow to the south west
Cambrai & Angas Valley fires still glowing an incredible angry red!
We crossed over & headed for Blanchtown for some food & rest
(The power had gone hours before so we'd not eaten anything)
The ferry man said the police had closed the Sturt Highway to Adelaide
Redirecting all the traffic to get home some other way!
We waited at Blanchetown for a couple of hours: charging our phones @ the BP
Then more phone calls from friends & loved ones saying "Don't go back!"
"What if the wind changes & you have to evacuate?"
So we ended up @ the Waikerie Hotel Motel for the night!
